Body Lift
A comprehensive, 360-degree surgical restoration designed to elevate, tighten, and re-proportion the entire lower torso, flanks, and thighs.
What Is A Circumferential Body Lift?
The 360-degree Body Lift is the gold standard of post-bariatric and massive weight loss reconstruction. When weight is lost rapidly, the skin envelope loses its elastic recoil, resulting in heavy, draping tissue that hangs circumferentially around the trunk.
This transformative procedure removes this continuous belt of excess skin and fat around the waistline, physically lifting the outer thighs, elevating the buttocks, and flattening the abdomen in one continuous, harmonized surgical intervention.

What Concerns Does A Body Lift Address?
- 01Circumferential tissue overhang (a 'belt' of loose skin) around the waist
- 02Deflated, sagging, or flat buttock contours
- 03Ptosis (drooping) of the lateral (outer) thighs
- 04Severe abdominal skin redundancy and muscle separation
- 05Chronic skin irritation, rashes, and hygiene issues within deep skin folds
Tummy Tuck vs. Body Lift
An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) strictly addresses the anterior (front) wall of the abdomen. It does nothing to improve the flanks, the outer thighs, or a sagging posterior.
For patients who have lost 50, 75, or 100+ pounds, addressing only the front creates an unnatural imbalance. The 360 Body Lift is the necessary alternative, treating the torso as a complete cylinder, ensuring that the lifting vectors pull upward smoothly across the entire circumference of the body.

The Dr. Gandhi Difference
A circumferential body lift is one of the most mechanically demanding procedures in plastic surgery, requiring the patient to be safely repositioned mid-operation to address both the front and back of the body.
Dr. Gandhi's approach is deeply rooted in structural engineering and advanced vascular safety. He utilizes multi-layered, deep fascial suspension techniques to ensure the lifted tissues are anchored to strong ligaments, preventing the scars from widening or dropping over time. This meticulous tension-distribution guarantees a result that is not only dramatic, but sustainable.
Dr. Gandhi's Insider Tip
"A body lift is not merely a cosmetic enhancement; it is the final, profound step in reclaiming your physical identity after massive weight loss. It removes the physical and emotional weight of the past, allowing your true anatomy to finally surface."
— Dr. Giriraj Gandhi
The Anterior Resection (Front)
Functions similarly to an extended tummy tuck. The abdominal muscles are repaired, and the drooping skin apron (pannus) is removed, resetting the naval to a natural, youthful position.
The Lateral Vector (Sides)
The incision extends over the hip bones, pulling the heavy tissues of the outer thighs and flanks sharply upward, eliminating 'saddlebags' and creating a sleek hourglass or V-taper silhouette.
The Posterior Suspension (Back)
The patient is repositioned, and the skin across the lower back is excised. The remaining tissue is pulled upward to act as an auto-augmentation, restoring youthful volume and projection to the deflated buttocks.
Is a body lift safe to perform all at once?
Yes, for properly selected candidates who are in excellent health and have maintained a stable weight. However, Dr. Gandhi may recommend staging the procedure (breaking it into two surgeries) if medical history or the volume of tissue indicates a safer, phased approach is required.
How much weight do I need to lose before surgery?
You should be at or very near your final goal weight, and crucially, you must have maintained that specific weight for a minimum of 6 months. Fluctuating weight after a body lift will severely compromise your surgical results.
Will insurance cover a body lift?
While the procedure is largely considered cosmetic, the anterior portion (panniculectomy) may be partially covered if the overhanging skin causes documented, chronic medical issues like severe rashes or infections. Our clinic can assist with the necessary clinical documentation.
Phase 1: Nutritional Optimization
Massive weight loss patients often have nutritional deficiencies. You must follow a strictly guided high-protein diet and specific vitamin supplementation protocols for weeks prior to surgery to ensure your body has the building blocks necessary for massive wound healing.
Phase 2: Medical Clearance
A comprehensive blood panel, EKG, and clearance from your primary care physician or bariatric surgeon are strictly required to ensure you can safely tolerate general anesthesia for an extended duration.
Phase 3: The Support System
You cannot recover from a 360 body lift alone. You must arrange for a dedicated, full-time caregiver to assist you with standing, walking, and wound care for the first 7 to 10 days post-operation.
The First 2 Weeks
This is a period of strict rest. You will have surgical drains placed around the circumference of the incision. You must sleep in a flexed, 'beach chair' position to relieve tension on both the front and back incisions simultaneously.
Weeks 3 to 6
Drains are removed and your mobility increases significantly. You will wear a medical-grade compression garment 24/7 to control edema (swelling) and help the skin adhere smoothly to the newly contoured muscle bed.
Months 3 to 6
The profound transformation becomes fully apparent as residual swelling dissipates. You are cleared to resume intense physical conditioning. The circumferential scar will begin the slow process of fading from pink to a flat, pale line, permanently hidden beneath standard underwear.
